Tesla soon plans to release their self-driving electric Semi truck. Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled the truck back in 2017. The vehicle is being hailed as the change the trucking industry needs. The question is, what does this mean for our nation’s truck drivers?
Currently, the trucking industry is suffering from a shortage of about a million drivers across the nation. A large cause of the shortage derives from the sacrifices and stresses of truck driving not justifying the wages paid drivers.
That’s why automated trucks such as the Tesla Semi, among others, are being celebrated as a necessary development in the industry. These self-driving vehicles follow predetermined routes without the need for a driver.
The first models, however, will still need drivers to help them avoid any issues. A benefit of these automated vehicles is that truckers will be able to rest while driving since they won’t have to press the gas pedal to drive.
New laws restricting drivers from operating their vehicles for longer than 10 hours have been a topic of debate among those in the industry. With the Tesla Semi, truckers will be able to relax while the truck drives itself. Not only does this benefit drivers, but companies like Amazon will be able to transport their goods more quickly and efficiently.
As of now, the Tesla Semi is still in development and no definite release date. The Semis will initially be solely for Tesla use. Eventually, Tesla plans on selling their vehicles to other companies.
While many claim the trucks will revolutionize the industry, it is yet to be seen what this means for our nation’s drivers. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
